Selecting Dog Food

A healthy pet will have more energy, a better coat, be better behaved and generally be happier. Keeping you pet healthy starts with a good diet, and while there are many types of dog food products on the market, some are better for your dog than others. With many factors to consider such as the breed of your dog, its age and any health issues, determining a well-balanced, healthy diet for your dog can be daunting.

Read the Label

Before purchasing dog food, read the label carefully. Review the ingredients and nutritional information to see how much protein and fat is included. Quality dog food should contain a significant amount of protein (lamb, chicken, beef, etc.) and some fat. As dogs are considered omnivores, it is important that the food includes enough protein for normal function. Protein is necessary to maintain a lean body, promote a healthy, shiny coat and help build and preserve muscle mass.

Quality dog food will list protein first or second in the ingredients list. If this list includes wheat gluten, grains, or chemical preservatives first, then the food may not contain enough protein to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Foods that are high in grains and preservatives should be avoided because they also may not contain enough protein and other nutrients. It is also a good idea to check that the food contains omega fatty acids and vitamins such as Vitamin E and Vitamin C.

Know Your Dog

Regular visits to a veterinarian are recommended throughout your dog's life. A vet should also be consulted when selecting a dog food if your dog suffers from medical problems such as thyroid or digestive issues. As your dog ages, you may need to investigate different food formulas to ensure that their diet continues to provide the nutrients to stay healthy.

Many pet food companies produce dog food for different stages in your dog's life. Puppy formulas, young adult formulas and adult formulas are available. Since puppies need more protein than adult dogs, make sure to choose a formula that's high in protein. Avoid giving your puppy table scraps as this is a difficult habit to break once they reach adulthood. If you purchase a quality dog food, you should not need to supplement it with other foods. Bones and treats can then be used to reward your dog and for training.

Stay Informed

Being aware of what you're feeding your dog is the best way to prevent illness or even death. Search online for pet owner newsletters or join pet food forums that provide the latest information on pet food recalls or studies on the newest pet foods available. While you don't want to constantly switch from dog food to dog food, being aware of what's going on in the pet food industry can help you make the best decisions for your dog and their well-being.
